Most of the children at the Halter Inc. ranch Saturday morning were particularly interested in feeding the horses and donkeys leftover squashes still scattered around the field from a recent pumpkin patch celebration. Angelique, on the other hand, stayed busy petting the numerous dogs that kept coming back to demand her attention.

OutSmart | LGBTQ-Affirming Nonprofit Helps Houston Teens Find Permanent Housing

There are 11,000 kids in foster care in the state of Texas, according to the 2019 CPA Data Book. These are young people who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. And 1,100 of those youth will reach the age of 18 and be emancipated (or “aged-out” of the system) without being adopted.

This topic is very near to my heart. My son was adopted at birth from a local, private adoption agency. We went through three birthmothers before we were successfully matched. It was extremely stressful and at times we weren’t sure if we would have the strength to push through. We were very glad we did.

Traveon is one of some 24 children hoping to find a forever home through The Way Home Adoption Agency, which focuses solely on children ages 11 to 17, who just by their age are hard to place.
